C.M. Bidwell & Associates, Ltd. has been a federally registered investment advisory with the Securities and Exchange Commission since our founding by Dr. Bidwell in 1979. While a finance professor at the University of Hawaii, Dr. Bidwell was asked to manage the pension funds of a small local institution. He is a recognized expert in market anomalies having published several papers in academic journals beginning in the 1970’s. His thesis that positive earnings surprises coupled with a low price-to-earnings ratio formed the model for hedge fund managers and other quantitative investors for decades to come. Now 35 years later the business has over $400 million in assets under management including accounts with the State of Hawaii Employees’ Retirement System.
Our firm has remained academically inclined, maintaining a focus on market anomaly research and continuing to enhance our quantitative model of stock selection. We seek out employees with high academic achievement and a desire to continue learning to make us better at managing money. All employees are involved in the research process, ensuring our strong emphasis on objective portfolio management.
We are very much a family firm with a select group of clients. We have never been interested in an ever-growing client base. We are interested in knowing our clients and providing them with excellent personal service. We do not receive commissions for trades we place nor do we sponsor proprietary funds. Our clients pay us a percentage of the assets we manage for them. When their accounts grow in size, our fees grow by a commensurate amount. As such, we make objective investment decisions based on our clients’ goals. It has always been our view that if we excel at what we do, the clients will follow.
We encourage you to read more about our approach!
